Critics Aren’t Raving, but Audiences Love The Addams Family!

Yes, it is every producer’s goal to win the approval of the critics, but ultimately it’s up to the “real” people, the audiences, the ticket purchasing public to make or break a show.  And from what I’ve read, audiences are LOVING the kooky Addams Family musical.  And at the end of the day, isn’t that what makes a successful show - audiences that walk out of the theatre smiling and humming and happy?  So if the creative team of the Addams Family musical can’t rely on the critics, then it’s up to the fans to show their support through WORD OF MOUTH.

Below is the “Word of Mouth” Review from Broadway.com, where REAL people review the show.

If you’ve seen the show, or just want to offer your support of the show, please leave a comment here and let the world know how you feel about The Addams Family on Broadway.  And if you have pictures you’d like to share, please e-mail them to afblog@comcast.net, and I’ll get them put up here.

Fabulous!!!! I enjoyed it so much the first time that I actually drove six hours through an ice storm to see it again in Chicago. Somehow I will find a way to get to New York for a third performance. Don’t miss this one!!!

Ignore the critics! This was a great show! I thoroughly enjoyed it and cannot wait for the june audio release!

I think the critics and people who review shows for a living are not, perhaps, the people who should ultimately decide its worth or success. Maybe we’ll leave that up to the “regular” people who pay good money (some more than once) to see the show. Of course not everything, or every type of joke, is for everyone. Jeez. You can’t please the entire world and certainly not every “critic” who “does it for a living”. I paid to be entertained and I very
much was. I didn’t go to see Bebe Neuwirth or Nathan Lane (nothing against them). I think the ENTIRE cast did a fabulous job! I’ll be seeing it again this summer and am NOT worried about how it “COULD have been so much better”. Yay, The Addams Family–A New Musical! May it last a long time. :D

I’m keeping an open mind until I see the show. I find it interesting that one prominent critic, John Simon, gave it an unqualified rave on all fronts.

  5. LisaS says:

I thought this musical was hilarious. Entertaining from start to finish…have no idea what the critics saw!

  6. Liz says:

I’m going to see this in New York hopefully soon! Very excited–I won’t take the critic’s word just yet! (:

I’ve seen the show and I agree with the critics: It’s awful. Nathan Lane is a genius. Bebe Neuwirth was a distraction of the first magnitude with her terrible vibrato. Not funny at all, except for Lane. Score completely sucks. I took my whole family to see this flop, $700 down the sewer.

Absolutely the funniest show I’ve ever seen on Broadway.. You snap your fingers to the opening music then the curtain opens on the whole stoned faced family.. you start to laugh then and never stop… Thanks for a great night.

My wife and I saw it this past weekend 1/9/10 we haven’t enjoyed a musical comedy so much since the Producers. Nathan Lane is the best…..

Totally disapponted in the show on Friday 2/11. Nathan Lane did not perform this evening and there was no announcement or signs posting this change. We felt totally ripped off. The theater handled this so poorly. The ONLY reason my party of 6 came to see this show was to see Nathan Lane perform. And if that wasn’t bad enough, Bebe Neuwirth was not performing either. No where on the Addams Family website could I find this information. And at no time were we notified of this!! The only mention was a piece of paper inserted in the playbill that we didn’t even have time to read because we took our seats at 7:55, the lights went off, and the show started. In this economy, people should not be ripped off like this when it is very expensive to take time off from work and make the trip into the city from Connecticut and buy expensive theater tickets. This should be made up to us in some way!!

Expect Nathan to miss a lot of shows before his “last performance.” He did the same thing in London with The Producers. Ticket buyer beware!

Hi! I was at the 2-13 show of the Addams Family and missed both Nathan Lane AND Bebe Neuwirth. Needless to say it was a MAJOR disappointment. I am trying my luck one last time this Tuesday March 1st hoping to see Nathan Lane before his last perfromance. Any news as to scheduled days off this week – his last week on the show?
